USE CASES
Ask for the work. Follow it to done.
The people who make hm run their own work through it. Their consulting practice keeps a folder on their machine that holds each project and its record — a Works — and two kinds of work in it show what that is like: making teaching videos, and running research from a question to a written finding. In both, the work was asked for, planned, handed out and followed from inside hm.
Two roles do most of the moving. The supervisor that reviews plans before work starts — the Superintendent — turns what you ask for into a plan you approve. An agent doing one job at a time, with an owner — a hand — picks up each task. Handing a job to an agent is called dispatch, and starting one is always your call.
01 / TEACHING VIDEOS
Ask for a teaching film, and get back one that has been checked.
A film that explains how several copies of a document stay in agreement while people edit them at once — asked for in a paragraph, and handed back as a render with the checks behind it.
- You describe the film you want, in writing. The Superintendent reviews the request before any plan exists, then turns it into a plan with a task for each cut.
- The film is held to research done first. Its task waits on the research, so what the film explains is what the research found.
- A hand renders each cut, pulls stills from its own render to check it, and hands back what it measured — down to whether every caption lands with the voice.
- You follow each cut on the board as it moves, without asking anyone where it has got to.
Not everything went to plan, and the record says so: the narrated cut runs longer than the four minutes it was planned at, and its voice still wants a listen by ear before anyone calls it finished.
02 / RESEARCH
Research, from question to finding, without leaving hm.
A question goes in and a written memo comes out, kept beside the plan it answered and the work that was built from it.
- You write the question down as a request and approve it before the plan is made. The plan names the brief it came from, so nobody has to guess what was asked.
- A hand reads the sources and writes the memo. When a source does not say what the question assumed, the memo says so first, before anything is built on it.
- The next task starts from that memo. The code built from it, and the teaching film above, are held to what it found.
- The question, the finding and everything that followed stay in one Works, so the answer is still there when you come back to it.
Not every run was clean: one research task was closed by the person running the Works, because its agent could not reach hm, and the note on it says that too.
03 / HOW THE WORK MOVES
What carries the work, whatever the work is.
Films and research are different jobs, and they moved the same way. These are the three things you would lean on for your own, and each links the page that shows you how.
The Superintendent drives the work.
Ask in plain words — “what’s in flight?”, “add a task to this plan” — and it answers from your Works. When it wants to change something, it shows you the exact command first, and nothing runs until you approve it.
How to ask the SuperintendentYou dispatch, and follow it as it happens.
Start an agent on a task from the board, then watch its card move from Ready to Landed as each change is recorded. There is nothing to refresh, and no one to chase for a status.
How to follow work on the boardHands pick up where the last one left off.
When one task depends on another, the handoff is written down rather than kept in someone’s head. Several hands can work one plan, and each starts from what the last one finished — a memo, a render, a check — not from a blank page.

04 / BUILT WITH HM
hm is built the same way.
The work on this product is planned, handed out and followed from a Works of its own, and this page was one task in it. That record is private. What is published from it is the release notes: every version on the changelog is the note written for that release, printed as it was written.
05 / WHAT THIS DOES NOT SHOW
Both uses are by the people who make hm.
Neither is hm running work for another company, and this page does not claim it is. The films and the research are the practice’s own work, not a client engagement, and their records are private. To try the same flow on your own work, start with the docs. If you have a case you want to talk through, the route is the contact page.
